Posters ‘n’ doing the tourist thing.
•• Published: May 8, 2013
Irish en-mass, ‘an clann’ traveled to Italy to celebrate my sisters wedding. She shared a few traditional Irish wedding customs with the Italian priest to his delight and surprise. We explored the surrounding countryside, villages and towns. Visiting nearby cities I spent the day photographing architecture, graffiti & posters. The advantage of not reading the language means I could appreciate the essence, elements and layout of the posters without distraction.
A good poster will work, portray its message efficiently at an A5 (210 x 148 mm) size to an AO (1189 x 841 mm) size. Granted a small poster may need some alteration to be reused at a larger size. Here in Ireland posters tend be of a smaller scale.
In Italy posters make large statements at least A2 (two large A3 photocopy paper sheets, long edge, side by side) in size more often larger. In Florence the Italians demonstrate this with gusto. There were shops dedicated only to posters. Posters when displayed around the streets wouldn’t be mistaken for pamphlets.
A posters message needs to be instantly recognised. Supporting information should compliment the over all image of the poster. Standing out isn’t about gaudy colours. A smart, beautiful or distinctive image can potray a hundred words
