e-Car Power points around Wexford • 11 months later
Nearly a year later during a trip across the country I noted various types of e-Car chargers had sprouted along my route. Last month when renewing my car tax I noticed an e-Car charger in the Car park of the new County Council building.
The weekend before last I while out driving we stopped to admire the view across the Slaney and down to the estuary from the Ferrycarrig Hotel car park, beside the entrance to the leisure centre we spotted another e-car charger.
.
Curiosity aroused I returned to the esb.ie/ecars website. Were there many more public e-car chargers around Wexford town? Has anyone been using them? Besides the chargers I’ve come across personally there are more in Whites hotel car park and another 24 hour access point at the Wexford Car Centre at Ardcavan Business Park.
On the esbecarsblog.ie website you can meet the 21 ESB e-Car ambassadors. The ESB had 21 e-Car ambassadors around Ireland through out 2012 into 2013 test driving a selection of electric cars. Electric Renault Kangoo Z.E, Nissan Leaf E Car and Mitsubishi iMiev “Tom Fortune lives in Gorey an Architectural Technician studying for a BSc in Sustainable Architecture at Carlow IT in Wexford town. The e-Car was used to drive to college which is a 90 km round trip, as well as for social driving trips. On campus it was exposed to over 800 college students and a charge point was installed to further extend the range of the e-Car.”
Thomas reported from Wexford Town, he finished his test run last March. Tom shares his experience during his test period on his blog reports, the latest being E Car update. You can follow other ESB e-Car ambassadors post’s at esbecarsblog.ie All in all Thomas found his e Car trial positive ‘…in one word…PERFECT…’. With a little planning he could go where he needed to. The car handled as well as any other car he’d driven, saved him money, parked conveniently and was an asset for the weekly shop. He did express disappointment at the €25,000 price tag, expensive in comparison to other cars in the class size .
Currently the ESB are running a television e-Car campaign staring some of the E-Car ambassadors. At least view the Fully Charged 2012 – Test Drive Day “Smooth take off & landing” video. For an over view of some electric cars available view the Fully Charged 2012 – TV3 interview video. Electric fleets – Leading the charge for a sustainable business. More downloadable pdf publications on electric transport.
The Nissan Leaf E Car and Mitsubishi iMiev can travel at speeds up to 120km but are most efficient at 70kmh, 75kmh. Traveling 130 – 160 kilometers on a full charge. Electric top ups are available at dedicated home charging points connected to the domestic supply, Public charging points: On street, Car Parks, Shopping Centres, Public transport stations and Hotels also at Fast charging points: Petrol stations and Road side cafes.
“The Irish government, ESB and the Irish motor vehicles industry are working together to reach the target of 10% of all vehicles being electric by 2020. The Irish government has committed to incentives up to €5000 plus zero vrt for pure electric cars. ESB ecars is also providing FREE home charge points to the first 2,000 purchasers of electric cars.”
I have yet to witness a car charging at any of the charge points. I have seen a few ESB electric vans around. A number of Smart Car drive around the town regularly. Pizza anyone? [I don’t know if those in particular are electric though]
If you are aware of any other public electrical points around the town or county feel free to drop me a line or leave a comment.

There is a Fast Charge Point at Maxol Service Station, Arklow Road in Gorey.
& Nope! I won’t be converting my ‘turn of the century’ Ford Ka to electricity, any time soon, she’s perfect the way she is.
