Design & Communications, post and telephone.
The invention of the postal & telephone systems can with out a doubt be listed as some of the more important inventions of the modern age. With the forming of the Irish free state in the 1922 the postal system transfered to the new Irish republic. Below is the selection of identities, logos that go in to the making of a nations communications.
Aire Puist agus Telegrafa 1924-84
This also hearlded the coming of an Irish telehone system.
P&T (1969)- Post and Telegraphs was designed by Damien Harrington, Kilkenny Design Workshops. Ireland was the first Country to establish a state design service in April 1963. Damien Harrington was the founder of the Graphic design section of the Kilkenny Design Workshops. As a child I was fascinated by the + created by it’s invisibility.
In 1984 the split between telephones and the postal system created two state-sponsored bodies. an Post and Telecom Eireann.
An Post, 1984, Was designed in the Kilkenny Design Workshops. The wavy lines representing the franking marks signifying, the post is on its way.
Telecom Eireann 1984 Designer: Peter Dabinett, Kilkenny Design Consultancy. The final design combined the gaelic forms of the T & E
Later becoming Eircom in 1999 and going public, today a private company with the monopoly on the Irish telephone infrastructure.
The Damien Harrington mark is utterly timeless — as a child I too was obsessed by it, even years before I knew what graphic design was or before I met the man himself. A true original just like the designer himself
